Hi Andrea,

I love building software. Programming and design are tools you can use to build a positive impact on the world from wherever you live.

And I love teaching. I love hearing from students that they've learned a lot, enjoyed learning, and are out there making things they couldn't make before.

So I’m always trying to make your learning experience better, to help you gain new skills, faster, so you can use your new, high-impact knowledge to ship quality software to make the world better.

That's why my last workshop was a new course format that mixed the exciting and motivating features of a live workshop (specific days, livestreams) and the flexibility of self-paced learning (learn at any time of day, wherever you are, with bonus exercises if you finish early & want to go further).

My first “Master MCP” Cohort back in September was a hit! 352 folks enrolled to learn how to use this fast-growing technology. (Growing even faster now that OpenAI has announced MCP support to make apps available to their 800 million monthly users!)

This cohort was the first time I’ve changed up my teaching format in years, and I learned a lot that I’d like to share with you.

Personally, I loved the cohort format experience — and with an average recommendation score of 4.5+ I’m confident saying the attendees loved it too!

For example, one student, Jonathan, was able to put his new knowledge to work right away on a high-stakes project. His employer put him to the task of building a tool that enables users to interact with AI agents to run simulations and scenarios within a mapped GUI. This is the perfect use case for MCP and Jonathan’s using what he learned to connect several app services with the agent. And he's only been in his current position as a software engineer for just over a year.

That’s the beauty of working in a new ecosystem like this. Even when you're kind of new to the work, you can hit the ground running and quickly become an expert in highly sought-after skills!

Another student, Ashwinee, told me that he found the cohort material to be extremely useful in saving him a lot of time… despite being “a bit behind schedule.” 😅

Life happens for learners

That last bit from Ashwinee about “feeling behind” is really important, because he's not alone.

As I write this email, weeks after the MCP cohort wrapped up, there are students in MCP cohort workshops working through the exercises right now.

In fact, of the hundreds of students who signed up for the cohort, I found that most are completing the material at their own pace rather than the pace outlined by the cohort.

All my Q&A live streams and student Discord discussions are still available, so this is a perfectly sensible way to work through the class, but it did surprise me a little!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about where to take this MCP learning experience next.

Despite vibrant discussions on Discord, doubling up my office hours for time zone differences, and intentionally spacing/pacing exercises for gradual progress, most people’s schedules are already full… and finding time to learn on an outside schedule is a challenge.

Unfortunately, this led people like Ashwinee and others to feel like they were behind on something.

I think a little pressure is good for motivation, but I don't want my students to feel like they’re missing out because they’re not able to follow the schedule for my course.

Life happens for me, too!

Another challenge here is for me to run a live cohort, I personally need to be highly available.

In fact, I would be running one right now, but I’ve put myself on paternal leave to spend time with my brand new baby (baby #6!).

Add to that the holidays coming up, and finding a good spot on the calendar is a big challenge.

And now — weeks after we wrapped up — lots of people are asking me how they can get access to the workshops.

What’s a guy to do!?

My conclusion is this: Time-based cohort learning is amazing for certain groups and group sizes, and event topics, and I will be running them more in the future!

But right now, I think that MCP is so important, I want to remove barriers to learning it.

My goal is always to help you get the most out of your learning and enjoy doing it.

So in the coming weeks, I’ll begin shifting the next enrollment of Mastering MCP to a fully self-paced experience, more like my other courses that you know and love.

In the first week of December, I’m re-launching my four best MCP workshops that you can purchase before the end of the year and work through on your own schedule.

You’ll still get to enjoy the community in our Discord channel specifically for MCP, and you’re always welcome to join my weekly KCD Office Hours with questions about MCP or anything.

If you participated in the original live cohort, you’ll be invited to join the new self-paced version. You won't miss out on anything here! It's a great opportunity for you to solidify your understanding of MCP. I'm excited for you to become leaders in the Discord and help guide new learners with your experience.

Plus, lower prices!

Another significant piece of feedback I’ve received/observed from learners is the learning curve for the Epic Workshop app itself is pretty steep.

So in addition to the launch of the four MCP workshops, I’ll be working on improvements to the learning environment. This will be a free upgrade for everyone using the Epic Workshop App, whether it’s Epic Web, Epic React, or Epic AI! Always trying to innovate!

My goal is to make it easier for you to learn, anywhere in the world, regardless of your schedule, at the most accessible price I can offer.

And MCP continues to be forefront in the zeitgeist, which means you’ll be hearing more from me in the coming weeks about the things I’m learning and sharing.
