&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;LLMs are probabilistic systems, &lt;em&gt;not&lt;/em&gt; deterministic like every other tool we’re accustomed to.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;But while risk &lt;em&gt;is&lt;/em&gt; inevitable, it’s not a reason to give up on AI. Deterministic programming is risky, too! We’ve just learned how to deal with it over years of experience, with professional patterns, best practices, and tools.&lt;/p&gt;

They’re one of the most important things you’ll do.&lt;/p&gt;

They don’t &lt;em&gt;want&lt;/em&gt; to tinker with logs or poke around in the console like we do.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;For all of the power LLMs derive from their flexibility based on context, there’s a careful line to walk where the “magic” turns into “what the f is going on!?”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li class="list_item" style="padding:0 0 0 1em;margin:0;margin-left:1em"&gt;&lt;span&gt;You need to let them pause and resume long running tasks. You need to handle browser refreshes gracefully.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="list_item" style="padding:0 0 0 1em;margin:0;margin-left:1em"&gt;&lt;span&gt;If you’re building a workflow that takes a long time, tell them upfront.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="list_item" style="padding:0 0 0 1em;margin:0;margin-left:1em"&gt;&lt;span&gt;If the agent is about to do something of consequence (like editing or removing files), you need the user to know they’ll be asked for permission via a “human-in-the-loop” workflow that keeps them in control of their data and systems.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;But with an LLM, sometimes it just… generates garbage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;You can provide all the context you want, and &lt;strong&gt;still&lt;/strong&gt; occasionally get a low-quality response. It might be incomplete or different from what you asked for, or hallucinate with confidence.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;And unlike error handling in traditional deterministic software, we need more and better tools to catch and handle these kinds of mistakes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;Remember those lawyers who thought ChatGPT was a search engine and cited hallucinated court cases that didn’t exist. Eek.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;So yes, you need evals. You need guardrails.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"&gt;But you also need to know what kinds of things are too high-risk to run through an LLM, and stick to deterministic software best practices for those use cases.&lt;/p&gt;

But it’s &lt;em&gt;especially&lt;/em&gt; true with LLMs in the mix, because &lt;strong&gt;it’s so easy to go fast in the wrong direction&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

But good experimentation is built on having a strong understanding of the problem, and good systems design skills.&lt;/p&gt;
