<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">You need to constantly think about scoping the work to the right level, and providing the right context.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">The generic “everything apps” and off the shelf tools felt like I was working against them.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">To get the real juice out of my LLM assisted workflows, I needed a custom system sitting between me and the model.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5"><em>And maybe most importantly, I needed to set your expectations carefully.</em></p>

That’s true in coding, and it’s true in any kind of workflow. Once you’ve made that mistake, you’re toast!</p>

<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">So how could I customize my AI assistant to best help my creative work…without undermining my creativity?</p>

<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">When I’m building a new course, I always start by breaking down the design and production tasks into many small steps. LLMs <em>can</em> do this (sometimes) but I prefer to do this myself.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">One of the most gnarly steps has always been defining the specific <em>learning goals</em> for each lesson. A couple of sentences to summarize the purpose of the lesson.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">Understanding how each lesson fits into the whole picture is <em>hard</em> to keep in your head all at once, especially when each course is 100+ videos! So these one liner summaries are super valuable to <em>me</em> even if they never get seen by anybody else.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">This bit of LLM support helped me make my own decisions about the order and priority of lessons, what to cut and what to expand. That <em>decision</em> isn’t something an LLM can do, but it helped me see the path much more clearly so I could make an informed decision more easily.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">This kind of LLM summarizing could also be applied to converting a transcript of a video to an SEO summary, or other very specific use cases where the output is going to be read by machines instead of humans.</p>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">It’s still important to build in systems to verify quality and accuracy, but when you learn how to give an LLM the right background data about you, your work, and your preferences, at the right time, the quality of these kinds of summaries can be extraordinary!</p>
<h3 class="" style="font-weight:bold;font-style:normal;font-size:1em;margin:0;font-size:1.17em;margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#000000;line-height:1.5"><strong>Second Win: Context Engineering (for me, AND the LLM)</strong></h3>
<p class="" style="margin:1em 0;font-family:-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,'Segoe UI',Roboto,Oxygen-Sans,Ubuntu,Cantarell,'Helvetica Neue',sans-serif;color:#2d2d2f;font-size:16px;line-height:1.5">I knew I needed to design my system to give the model the exact right context for the tasks at hand.</p>

The more steps and tasks, the easier it is for something to get missed — either the doing, <em>or</em> the tracking. It gets hard to keep everything in my head. On the other hand, documenting every little thing is a pain, and slows me down. Lose-lose.</p>
